European CDMOs, compared on digital maturity

A broad census of the European contract-manufacturing field — tier, ownership, modality and geography, read against the one axis still up for grabs. Every row is confidence-marked; maturity is read conservatively from public evidence only.

How to read it

255 CDMOs across 31 countries, from the global consolidators to single-site specialists. It's not a curated top-50; it's the whole field we could document. Every row is confidence-marked for how solid its facts are, and maturity is read conservatively from public signals only — so “early / paper-based” means “no public digital program we could find”, not a verdict. Filter and sort the field below.

All 255 CDMOs every time. The explorer's filter does not narrow these charts; they describe the market, not your shortlist.

Digital maturity

The maturity gap, cut three ways

Ratings are inferred from public signals. Only 7 of 255 CDMOs show a live, named digital program, and they are spread across tiers and ownership types. The early-stage majority sits in the mid and small tiers.

EarlyMidLeader

Before you quote "most CDMOs are behind" — weight it

  • Size-weight it. Among Tier-1 CDMOs (>€1bn revenue), 34% read early-stage (10 of 29); in Tier 3 it is 83% (115 of 139). The gap is concentrated in the small and mid tiers, so a head-count overstates it for the market by revenue.
  • Strip the guesses. The census labels 176 rows "early / paper-based", but 18 of them are low-confidence — no public digital signal found, which is not the same as confirmed absence. The snapshot above moves those to unknown and counts 158 as early. The charts below show the raw labels.

Darker = more CDMOs in that cell. Leaders exist in every tier (3 / 2 / 2 across Tiers 1 / 2 / 3), so size isn't a prerequisite. What changes with size is the floor: 34%of Tier 1 reads early-stage against 83% of Tier 3 — that's the addressable gap.

Maturity × ownership

Maturity × geography

MethodHow we scored this — methodology & sourcing3-level maturity label

Digital maturity is a single 3-level label — leader / middle / early (paper-based) — assigned conservatively from public signals only, as of 2026. It is deliberately a coarse read: the absence of a public program reads as 'early', which systematically under-credits private and CEE players. Treat it as a where-to-look-first signal, not a scorecard.

  • Leader — a named, specific digital program that is LIVE: a platform in production (e.g. an S/4HANA or MES rollout that has gone live), a plant already built around it, or a concrete AI / automation use case in operation.
  • Middle — general digitalization signals (automation capex, 'digital plant' language, a senior digital hire, a newly automated site), or a named program that is announced but not yet live. A go-live date is a plan, not evidence; the row moves up when the program ships.
  • Early / paper-based — no digital program we could find in public sources. This is a statement about public evidence, not proof of inaction.
  • Where a public digital program exists, the row now carries a 'src ↗' evidence link (an MES/ERP rollout, a named AI/automation initiative, an annual-report section) — every cited URL was fetched and confirmed. 98 of 255 rows (38%) have one; the rest have no public digital footprint we could cite, which is the finding, not a gap.
  • Every row also carries a data-confidence mark (high = audited / official disclosures, medium = reputable secondary sources, low = aggregator-only or inferred). A low-confidence maturity call should be read as 'unknown', not as a firm 'early'.
  • The headline distribution skews to 'early' by construction of the conservative method, and the census is front-loaded (the best-sourced ~40 rows first). A revenue-weighted view would likely tell a less lopsided story — don't read the raw count as 'most of the market is behind'.

Think a CDMO is mis-rated? The label reflects only what we could find in public sources by 2026. Point us to a named public program and we'll re-tier it in the open — and if you're the CDMO and the program isn't public, that gap is itself the finding.

The modality landscape

What they make — and where supply is thin

Small molecule and oral solid dose are crowded; the newer modalities — cell & gene, mRNA, ADCs — have the fewest suppliers in this census. Counts are per modality and overlap: a CDMO offering three modalities appears in three bars.

EarlyMidLeader

Supply per modality, by maturity

Modality breadth — specialists vs full-service

X-axis = number of modalities offered per CDMO (specialists on the left, full-service on the right).

Reading the map

The maturity band tells you where to start

A4BEE's offerings map onto exactly this spectrum — each following an Audit → Build → Care model. Where a CDMO sits above points to the first move.

Early / paper-based (esp. CEE + family-owned)

Pain: Paper batch records, siloed LIMS/MES/ERP, no digital strategy

Fit: eBR/MES setup + the Enabling eBR blueprint. Start with the free eBR Readiness or Plant Digital Readiness assessment.

Digital CDMO on a4bee.com ↗Take the eBR Readiness assessment →

Mid maturity (PE roll-ups, scaling biologics)

Pain: Heterogeneous systems across acquired sites; stalled AI pilots on ungoverned data

Fit: A governed data platform to unify plant data — Data Platform Blueprint, then PoC.

Enterprise AI on a4bee.com ↗Data & AI Maturity assessment →

Digital leaders (Lonza, Recipharm, Boehringer …)

Pain: Foundations exist; manual workflows across MES/LIMS/QMS remain

Fit: Production agents + GxP-validated RAG on SOPs/deviations, with an AI Operations Retainer for governance.

Questions

European CDMOs: common questions

How many CDMOs are there in Europe?
This census lists 255 contract development and manufacturing organisations (CDMOs) headquartered in Europe, across 31 countries. The most are in Italy (31), Spain (30), Germany (28), the United Kingdom (25) and France (15). It is a broad census rather than a top-50, so it includes small and niche manufacturers; each row is marked for how solid its data is. All 255 European CDMOs
Which are the largest CDMOs in Europe?
29 CDMOs in the census report revenue over €1bn: Lonza, Fareva, Catalent, Siegfried, Almac Group, Boehringer BioXcellence, Fujifilm Diosynth, Vetter Pharma, AGC Biologics, Sandoz, Zentiva Group, Gedeon Richter, Hemofarm, Sopharma, Biovet (Huvepharma), Seqens, Olon, F.I.S. Fabbrica Italiana Sintetici, BSP Pharmaceuticals, Patheon Italia and 9 more. Another 87 sit between €250m and €1bn.
Which European CDMOs are privately owned?
155 of the 255 are privately owned: 101 family-owned and 54 backed by private equity. The larger ones (revenue over €250m) include ACS Dobfar, Almac Group, Biofarma Group, Biovet (Huvepharma), BSP Pharmaceuticals, ESTEVE (Química / CDMO), F.I.S. Fabbrica Italiana Sintetici, Famar, Fareva, Hovione, Insud Pharma (Chemo), Olon and 51 more. The census records ownership, revenue tier and data confidence; it does not rate financial stability. Privately owned CDMOs in Europe (155)
Which CDMOs in Europe do cell and gene therapy?
29 CDMOs list cell and gene therapy among their capabilities, including AGC Biologics, Catalent, Fujifilm Diosynth, Lonza, Exothera, FinVector, Minaris Advanced Therapies, NorthX Biologics, Vibalogics, Viralgen Vector Core and 19 more. Cell and gene therapy CDMOs in Europe (29)
Which European CDMOs manufacture biologics and antibodies?
66 list biologics or biosimilars and 36 list monoclonal antibodies. Those with revenue over €1bn include Catalent, Fujifilm Diosynth, Gedeon Richter, Insud Pharma (Chemo), Lonza, mAbxience, Olon, Patheon Italia and Sandoz. Biologics and biosimilars CDMOs in Europe (66)
Where can I see CDMOs by country?
There is a list for every country with at least three CDMOs in the census: Italy (31), Spain (30), Germany (28), the United Kingdom (25), France (15), Switzerland (14), Poland (11), Belgium (9), Sweden (9), Greece (8), Ireland (8), the Netherlands (8), Portugal (8), Denmark (7), Austria (5), Finland (5), Norway (5), Czechia (4), Lithuania (4) and Bulgaria (3).

Work with A4BEE

Close the digital-maturity gap this landscape just showed you

A4BEE digitalises tech transfer, batch records and process verification for biotech and pharma — paperless, inspection-ready, released faster. Two-week maturity audit to a costed roadmap; live electronic batch records in six weeks.

About this comparison

Compiled from public sources as of 2026. Revenue, headcount, and site figures mix audited annual reports with aggregator estimates (frequently inaccurate for private and Central-European entities) — figures shown are as-reported and should be verified before quoting. Several CDMOs listed offer contract services as a secondary activity, so their "CDMO revenue" isn't separable from total company revenue. Digital-maturity ratings are inferred from public statements; the absence of a named program is not proof of inaction. A4BEE has no commercial relationship that biases any rating here.

What's inside

  • A broad census of 255 European CDMOs across 31 countries — filterable by digital maturity, tier, ownership, modality, country, and data-confidence
  • A real geographic map of Europe — CDMO count per country as a shaded choropleth
  • Sortable head-to-head table — company, HQ, tier, ownership, revenue, modalities, a digital-maturity rating, and a confidence mark on every row
  • Digital-maturity distribution — 7 named leaders with a live program vs. mid vs. early / paper-based, with low-confidence calls split out as unknown
  • Modality-supply + breadth charts — how many CDMOs cover each modality, from crowded small-molecule to thin cell & gene / mRNA
  • "Where to start" frame — which digitalisation move fits each maturity band

Best used for

  • Benchmarking a CDMO (yours or a target) against the European peer set
  • Segmenting the market by digital maturity to prioritise outreach or M&A
  • Briefing a team on the competitive landscape before a partnering or capacity decision
