Autosamplers & automated sampling, compared product-by-product
A vendor-neutral matrix of 85 autosampler / automated-sampling product lines from 38 makers for biotech & pharma, across 5 market segments — from bioprocess-aseptic samplers that pull sterile samples straight from bioreactors, to analytical autosamplers in QC/release labs, general-purpose liquid-handling robots, and process-analytics samplers. Compare the axes that actually drive the choice: pricing model (perpetual vs subscription) and hardware lock-in (vendor-agnostic vs platform-specific). Every row is confidence-marked against vendor datasheets; where a spec isn't public we say so. Several vendors ship more than one product line — each gets its own row.

|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| BBI-Biotech Germany | bioPROBE single / orbitSAM Autosampler The entry-level bioPROBE configuration — one probe per vessel feeding a simple auto-sorting carousel (orbitSAM), positioned as BBI-Biotech's budget automated sampler for single-reactor setups. | Bioprocess / aseptic | Perpetual | OEM cross-brand | Med |
| BBI-Biotech Germany | bioPROBE quad / multiSAM Autosampler The scale-up configuration — four independent probes (custom quad cannula holder) feeding a single multiSAM unit that can hold hundreds of cooled samples, built for parallel small-scale bioreactor screens rather than one large vessel. | Bioprocess / aseptic | Perpetual | OEM cross-brand | Med |
| BBI-Biotech Germany | coolSAM Autosampler The compact option — pairs bioPROBE's sampling head with an off-the-shelf Eppendorf ThermoStat C block instead of a dedicated carousel, trading capacity for a smaller footprint and both heating and cooling flexibility. | Bioprocess / aseptic | Perpetual | OEM cross-brand | Med |
| Cytiva (Danaher) United States | Xcellerex Sample Manifold Single-use aseptic sample-line accessory for Cytiva's Xcellerex XDR stirred-tank bioreactors and XDUO/XDM mixers — a consumable sampling component wired into the bioreactor's automation loop rather than a standalone robotic autosampler; Cytiva does not publish a fully-automated bench 'autosampler' SKU comparable to the analytical/liquid-handling entries in this set, so confidence is kept low. | Bioprocess / aseptic | OEM / consumables | Platform-specific | Low |
| Distek United States | BIOne 1250 Bioprocess Control Station (automated sampling) Not a dedicated benchtop autosampler like Distek's dissolution line — automated/scheduled sampling from the bioreactor runs through the control station's peristaltic pumps and PAT I/O rather than a separately branded sampling module. Distinct product line serving upstream bioprocess (cell culture/microbial) work rather than QC dissolution. | Bioprocess / aseptic | Perpetual | Platform-specific | Low |
| Eppendorf Germany | Bioprocess Autosampler Bolts directly onto Eppendorf's own DASware-controlled bioreactor line (DASbox, DASGIP, SciVario twin, BioFlo 320) — deep, retrofit-friendly integration but zero cross-brand support. | Bioprocess / aseptic | Perpetual | Platform-specific | Med |
| Flownamics United States | Seg-Flow S3 Automated Sampling System The workhorse Seg-Flow platform — reusable pinch-valve hardware with non-contact ultrasonic sensors that routes native or pre-diluted samples from up to 8 vessels to as many as 4 downstream analyzers, vendor-agnostic on both ends. | Bioprocess / aseptic | Perpetual | Vendor-agnostic | High |
| Flownamics United States | Seg-Flow S3G Autosampling System S3G is the S3 chassis reconfigured specifically for blood-gas-analyzer coupling — same pinch-valve sampling hardware, purpose-built to minimize gas exchange before pH/pCO2/pO2 analysis. | Bioprocess / aseptic | Perpetual | Vendor-agnostic | Low |
| Flownamics United States | Seg-Flow PS Sampling System Built for cell & gene therapy: a fully disposable, low-shear fluid path replaces S3's reusable tubing set, trading reusability for GMP traceability and zero cross-contamination risk in a small-footprint, per-bioreactor module. | Bioprocess / aseptic | OEM / consumables | Vendor-agnostic | Med |
| Merck Germany | MAST Autosampling Solution Originally Lonza's platform (developed in Bend, OR), acquired by Merck in 2023 — the only GMP-qualified automated aseptic sampler in this set built for large-scale stainless-steel manufacturing, not just bench-scale R&D. | Bioprocess / aseptic | Instrument + services | Vendor-agnostic | High |
| Merck Germany | NovaSeptum GO Sterile Sampling System Manual, not automated — a locking, no-dead-leg sampling valve for multi-use/stainless-steel processes, included as Merck's aseptic-sampling counterpart to MAST for facilities that haven't automated sampling yet. | Bioprocess / aseptic | OEM / consumables | Vendor-agnostic | Med |
| Merck Germany | NovaSeptum SURe Sterile Sampling Assemblies The single-use sibling to NovaSeptum GO — same closed, no-dead-leg sampling concept, but built to be discarded with the rest of a single-use bioreactor train rather than autoclaved and reused. | Bioprocess / aseptic | OEM / consumables | Vendor-agnostic | Med |
| Nova Biomedical United States | BioProfile FLEX2 On-Line Autosampler (OLS) Bridges Nova's FLEX2 bench analyzer to up to 10 bioreactors via automated line draws, turning a normally manual grab-sample workflow into near-hourly PAT-grade sampling — the tradeoff is you're locked into Nova's proprietary MicroSensor Card consumables for every reading. | Bioprocess / aseptic | OEM / consumables | OEM cross-brand | High |
| QB.systems (A4BEE)A4BEE Poland | QB AutoSampler Perpetual license + vendor-agnostic retrofit (OPC-UA/MQTT/REST) spanning sampling, dosing, filtration and bioreactors on one stack; fast case-study deployments. Newest entrant, small team, no issued-patent estate. | Bioprocess / aseptic | Perpetual | Vendor-agnostic | Med |
| Sartorius Stedim Biotech France | Ambr® External Sampling Module (ESM) Not a standalone sampler — it's the deck-side hardware that lets an Ambr system hand a sample cup off to a Nova FLEX2 for offline-quality chemistry, closing the loop between bioreactor control software and analyzer results without an operator in between. | Bioprocess / aseptic | Instrument + services | OEM cross-brand | Med |
| Sartorius Stedim Biotech France | Ambr® Analysis Module In-line pH and Raman spectroscopy module rather than a discrete grab-sampler — it measures at the Ambr vessel itself, avoiding a sample-transfer step entirely, but can't handle particulate-laden or highly viscous broths. | Bioprocess / aseptic | OEM / consumables | Platform-specific | Med |
| SecureCell Switzerland | Numera 3 The deepest analyzer-agnostic sampling stack in this set — modular multiplexer, dilution, filtration and routing modules built to feed almost any downstream instrument (HPLC, Cedex Bio HT, Vi-CELL, Nova Flex) rather than lock buyers into one brand. | Bioprocess / aseptic | Perpetual | Vendor-agnostic | High |

Aseptic bioprocess samplers — the deciding numbers
The rest of this page is product-level; a buyer choosing an aseptic bioreactor-side sampler needs the actual per-instrument specs. These are researched from each vendor's own datasheet/product page and cited — where a number isn't published, it says n/p rather than guess. QB.systems is excluded (see the QB note below).

Perpetual vs subscription — the 5-year shape
The pricing-model column above drives more of the 5-year cost than the sticker price does. No vendor publishes list prices, so this is the shape of the decision, not a quote — the timing of the spend and where the break-even sits.
Perpetual + service
- Upfront: high — instrument capital in year 0.
- Annual: service + consumables + sampling sets (typically a fraction of capital per year).
- 5-yr shape: big year-0 hit, then a lower flat run-cost.
- Best when: you keep the unit 4+ years, have capex budget, and want the lowest long-run cost.
Subscription / instrument-as-a-service
- Upfront: low — no capital, opex from day one.
- Annual: one recurring fee bundling hardware, service and often consumables.
- 5-yr shape: flat, predictable; higher cumulative if kept long.
- Best when: you want opex not capex, a short/uncertain horizon, or flexibility to swap platforms.
Break-even rule of thumb: perpetual usually wins past roughly year 3–4; subscription wins on short horizons, capex constraints, and platform flexibility. Get each shortlisted vendor to quote both the upfront and the 5-year all-in (service + consumables + validation) — the sticker price alone hides the decision.
Best for… — where we'd start
Four segments sit in this table; a buyer usually lives in one. Here's where to start per intent — picks are at product-line level, so confirm the specific instrument's sampling interval, volume and integration before shortlisting.
| If you're… | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Automated aseptic at-line bioreactor sampling | SecureCell (Numera) · Flownamics | Purpose-built automated aseptic sampling directly off the bioreactor — the core bioprocess niche. |
| HPLC / UHPLC analytical autosampler ecosystem | Agilent · Waters · Thermo Fisher · Shimadzu | The established analytical autosampler ecosystems — pick to match your existing chromatography stack. |
| High-throughput liquid handling / assay automation | Tecan · Hamilton | Robotic liquid handlers for assay prep and high-throughput screening. |
| At-line bioprocess metabolite / gas analysis | Nova Biomedical | Bioprocess analyzers with integrated at-line sampling for metabolites and gases. |
| Orchestrating mixed sampling hardware in software | QB.systems | A4BEE's control/automation layer over heterogeneous sampling hardware (house product — honest disclosure; see the QB note below). |
Picks are at vendor/product-line level from the positioning data above, not a per-instrument spec match. The aseptic-bioprocess segment is the deepest here; analytical and liquid-handling entries are context.
Disclosure · where QB.systems fits
Reading this comparison as A4BEE
We publish this portal, and QB.systems is our own product — so it sits in the table above as one neutral row, scored by exactly the same standard as everyone else. The honest read from the underlying analysis: QB is a credible, fast-moving, price-disruptive challenger in the bioprocess-aseptic niche, not the market's largest, most-capitalized or most-patented player. Its genuine edges are perpetual-license economics (no compounding subscription), a vendor-agnostic retrofit that spans sampling, dosing, filtration and bioreactors on one stack, and fast deployment. The trade-offs are just as real: a small team, no issued-patent estate, and a shorter peer-reviewed / GMP track record than Eppendorf, SecureCell, Merck's MAST or Flownamics. Early-stage, multi-vendor and cost-sensitive labs are where it fits best; validated commercial GMP at scale still favours the incumbents today.
About this data
Compiled from vendor datasheets, product pages and technical literature, product line by product line, current as of 2026. Segment, pricing and hardware-compatibility classifications are A4BEE's reading of that evidence, not vendor self-descriptions. Specs change; verify against the current datasheet (linked ↗) before a purchase decision. "908 Devices" is included as a market-consolidation case study — it divested its bioprocess line to Repligen in March 2025 and no longer competes here. Every row is confidence-marked; where a figure isn't public we show "n/d" rather than estimate. Vendor claims (including QB.systems') are flagged by the same confidence mark.
