The entry-level bioPROBE configuration — one probe per vessel feeding a simple auto-sorting carousel (orbitSAM), positioned as BBI-Biotech's budget automated sampler for single-reactor setups. Capacity conflicts between BBI's own sources: the live product page says 36 positions with a 51 × 15 mL rack still 'in development', while an older PDF claims 51. The shipping figure is used here. Note the barrier is mechanical, not a filter, and this is a positive claim rather than a gap: BBI's flyer sells 'unique filterless sampling technology' and 'no filters in the bioreactor, no issues with biofilms / biofouling'. So a pore size here would be wrong, not merely unsourced — the 0.2 µm that surfaces in search results is a Flownamics FISP probe's, a different vendor's part. The interval comes from BBI's dedicated bioPROBE technical-data page, whose table is headed 'valid for all bioPROBE Systems' — a spec table, not a leaflet, and byte-stable across captures from 2015 to 2021. Two things a future editor needs to know about it. First, it is gone: the live site publishes no number at all ('Die Probenintervalle sind frei wählbar'), the downloads page 404s and the sitemap is an empty urlset, so the archived URL is the citation and there is no live one to upgrade to. Second, BBI's own 2015 bioPROBE flyer disagrees with it, saying 'Sample interval: up to 5 min' ('bis zu 5 min') — do NOT cite the two as agreeing. The technical-data page wins on all three axes: it is a spec table rather than a two-page leaflet, it says 'from' (a minimum interval, which is what a sampler spec means) where the flyer's 'up to' reads as an upper bound and so is ambiguous in the wrong direction, and it is the later of the two. That the gap is real and not a search failure is corroborated third-party: Efromson 2021 (HardwareX) tabulates competing bioreactor autosamplers with a 'Minimal Sampling Interval' column and the bioPROBE cell reads NA while Omnicoll, EasySampler and BioSamplr carry numbers. Four published numbers sit close enough to be mistaken for this product's and none is: the 'bbi-biotech GmbH, Berlin' cited in Processes 2019 and 2022 is an IMPELLER (three-blade segment, 54 mm, 30°), not a sampler; the Eppendorf application note's 'Sampling frequency Every 2 h' is Eppendorf's own; Rupcic 2018 (PMC6027269) ran a bbi xCUBIO reactor with an UNNAMED aseptic probe — plausibly this one, unprovable, so it is not cited as a use; and Kuystermans 2014 cites BBI but sampled on an MSP FCP 5000 whose 'every 5 h' is that machine's. There are zero verifiable academic uses of bioPROBE, orbitSAM, multiSAM, coolSAM or iceBLOCK anywhere.

The scale-up configuration — four independent probes feeding one multiSAM that can hold hundreds of cooled samples, built for parallel small-scale screens rather than one large vessel. The richest of BBI's line: 40+ extension packs including filtration (96-well plates, Chromafil cartridges, MediaKap hollow fibre) and a 21 CFR Part 11 / Annex 11 audit-trail pack. Careful with the filtration packs — those are post-draw sample prep, not the sterile barrier, which is the probe valve. BBI publishes no cooling temperature for the Peltier pack; the ThermoStat C's own range is a third-party number and is not quoted here. The interval below is NOT inferred from the sibling row — BBI's bioPROBE technical-data table is explicitly scoped 'valid for all bioPROBE Systems', and single and quad are the two members, so it lands here in its own right. What is genuinely unpublished is the thing this configuration exists for: no multiSAM-level or per-reactor throughput figure exists anywhere, so 'time to service four reactors' has no answer and nothing says whether four probes cycle concurrently or in turn. Same for the analyzer count — 'unlimited atline processes' in the product presentation is marketing, not a countable spec, and must not be tabulated as one. See the bioPROBE single entry for why the archived 2015 flyer's conflicting 'up to 5 min' loses to that table, and for the four nearby published figures (a bbi IMPELLER in Processes 2019/2022, Eppendorf's own 2 h, Rupcic 2018's unnamed probe, and an MSP FCP 5000's 5 h) that must not be attributed to this product.

DISCONTINUED, and no longer merely 'probably' — its own product URL returns HTTP 301 Moved Permanently in both languages, redirecting into the generic automated-sampling page. A 301 rather than a 404 or a 302 is a deliberate permanent retirement, and it is recent: the page was still serving 200 in a May 2026 capture. The successor is iceBLOCK, which BBI's current architecture page puts in exactly this slot ('bioPROBE quad + multiSAM + iceBLOCK') with 96 water-free Peltier positions against coolSAM's 8; coolSAM is absent from that page in both languages. One thing will confuse a fact-checker: the sampling-overview page STILL lists coolSAM third among autosamplers, but its link points at the URL that 301s — a stale nav entry with a dead link, not evidence the product is current. The page content itself was byte-identical from 2015 to 2026, i.e. frozen for eleven years and then redirected. Kept here because installed units exist and its one unusual capability is worth knowing: it heats as well as cools, for deactivating cells or triggering a thermal step in the vial. Three cells are blank and all three are closed dead ends, not gaps. Line count: BBI states this product's capacity only in POSITIONS and never in reactors, and the likeliest misreading of the whole row is turning '4 sample vessels à 50 mL' into '4 reactors' — it is neither 1 nor 4. Sampling interval: the bioPROBE technical-data table that carries 'from 2 min' is scoped to bioPROBE SYSTEMS, and the coolSAM page's own Technical Details table has exactly three rows (Size, Variants, Tempering) with no interval row ever — and unlike the quad, whose page states outright that it is four bioPROBEs, nothing says which bioPROBE configuration a coolSAM shipped against, so there is no bounded inference to make. Analyzer coupling: BBI's own pitch is 'the concentrated analysis later on', i.e. deferred bench work, and no analyzer is ever named on this page — the named packs (MACSQuant, Vi-CELL XR, SIAS) all attach to the multiSAM.

Xcellerex Sample Manifold

A passive single-use 'seal-and-store' consumable for Cytiva's Xcellerex XDR bioreactors and XDUO/XDM mixers — an operator draws into a bag and seals it, so interval, dilution and analyzer coupling are structurally inapplicable rather than merely unpublished. Sample volume is the opposite case and is the one cell left blank — treat it as a closed dead end, not an unfinished row. Cytiva identifies this SKU by BAG COUNT ONLY, and that holds at every level of the record: no datasheet, IFU or spec table exists (both product pages literally read 'No documents available' and 'No overview available'), the XDUO ordering table's parenthetical is the bag count with no volume column beside it, and the printed product label itself — photographed on a resale listing, 'Single Use Sample Manifold -10 Bag', doc B103841-I Rev F — carries lot, expiry, storage range and quantity but no volume. A sweep of Fisher, VWR/Avantor, Thermo, Sigma-Aldrich, LabX, eBay, DotMed, EquipNet, Surplus Solutions, BioSurplus and the reseller's own site search returned the part with a count and never a volume. Two machine-readable channels say the same thing: Cytiva's own structured product API returns for 29041167 only 'Wetted Materials: C flex tubing, ULDPE' and 'Wetted Part: Yes' with an empty feature array for 29041165 (29041166 is absent from the US catalogue entirely), and the IFU URL pattern d3.cytivalifesciences.com/prod/IFU/[part-number].pdf — verified live for an unrelated part, 29277632 → 200 — 404s for all three of these. A separate sweep of the LEGACY record — four GE Healthcare data files, two GE Operating Instructions (one 322 pages, one 11k lines, both with zero occurrences of the word 'manifold'), and five original Xcellerex Inc. brochures and datasheets from 2006–2012 — found the product only ever as a catalog line or a one-clause aside ('sample manifolds are available optionally'). GE/Xcellerex never published a spec sheet for it either, so this is not a Cytiva-era omission. The only documents that could still carry the number are the XDR-50 to 2000 Operating Instructions 29-0646-43 AA (no reachable mirror) and the IFU shipped in the box, doc B103841-I Rev F — both a support request away, neither on the open web. Numbers that sit nearby and are NOT this product's: the 1/8 in swabbable sample line (the host biocontainer's), 27.5–45 kGy gamma (the XDM bags'), ReadyCircuit 50/250/500 mL sample bags (a different family), and every XDR/XDM working volume from 10 L up. One SKU caveat, confirmed twice from the live parts table: Cytiva binds 29041167 → 888-0430 and 29041165 → 888-0431, while 888-0755 appears only in a single dead eBay title and resolves nowhere in any GE or Xcellerex document — treat it as superseded or a repack, not as a third variant.

Listed for completeness, and the honest answer is that it is a bioprocess CONTROL STATION with no documented automated sampling: Distek's own 2025 brochure spec table covers working volume, agitation, gas, temperature, pumps (4 bi-directional peristaltic per side) and PAT I/O, and carries no sampling row at all. What it offers is signal integration for third-party probes, not physical sample withdrawal. Distek does sell an autosampler — in its dissolution-testing line, an unrelated product family whose numbers must not be carried across.

Two numbers not in the table because the sources disagree: dilution ratio (Flownamics publishes none; distributors quote 1:10, 1:20 and 1:25) and reactor count beyond 8 (an ASR+ / FlowWeb release is claimed to double it to 16). Storage is the separate FlowFrac 1000, not the S3 itself.

S3G is the S3 chassis reconfigured specifically for blood-gas-analyzer coupling — same pinch-valve hardware, with a fluid path built to stop gases diffusing out before pH/pCO2/pO2 is read. Interval and volume are blank deliberately, and a future editor must not 'fix' them: no S3G datasheet, manual or brochure exists anywhere in Flownamics' literature library, its own Product Specifications tab is four rows (Dimensions, Weight, Electrical, System Control), and that tab reproduces the S3 brochure's Electrical/System Control/Physical rows while omitting exactly Sample Cycle and Sample Size. The mechanism of the usual misattribution is on the page itself: its 'Literature' tab links the S3 brochure, whose header reads Model: S3 and which never says S3G. So the 10–45 min and 1.25–50 mL figures are the sibling's, and the S3G's own pitch is 'minimum sample volume' with no number attached.

Built for cell & gene therapy: a fully disposable, low-shear fluid path replaces S3's reusable tubing set, trading reusability for GMP traceability and zero cross-contamination risk in a small-footprint, per-bioreactor module. It is the one Seg-Flow that needs no ASR at the vessel. A US distributor advertises 24 reactors; Flownamics' own spec table, brochure and European distributor all say 16, so 16 is what's quoted here. Sampling interval is blank because the March 2024 brochure — the only PS document Flownamics publishes — has no cycle-time row in its specification panel at all; the sole claim anywhere is a distributor's qualitative 'fully customisable sampling intervals', which is not a number.

Originally Lonza's platform (developed in Bend, OR), acquired by Merck in 2022 — the only GMP-qualified automated aseptic sampler in this set built for large-scale stainless-steel manufacturing, not just bench-scale R&D. Storage and dilution are properties of the optional Gilson liquid handler, not of MAST itself.

Four columns below read 'not applicable' rather than sitting blank, and the difference matters: a person carries the sample, so there is no interval, no cooled bay, no dilution and no analyzer path. Frequently miscredited to Sartorius; it is Nova's module, and Sartorius' own integration brochure says so outright ("Ambr systems are provided by Sartorius; Nova BioProfile FLEX2 and ESM are provided by Nova Biomedical"). Listed for completeness and it is NOT an autosampler: a pH + Raman measurement accessory that the Ambr robot feeds, so it competes with the analyzer half of a sampling chain rather than the sampling half. FOUR published spec sets exist, and they are successive editions rather than contradictions — (A) Pub. SBI1558-e160401 Ver. 04|2016: 60 µL, 90 s; (B) 'Ambr Analysis Module — pH Calibration and Raman Spectroscopy Integration' Ver. 2020/03: 60 / 250 µL, 90 / 120 s; (C) 'Integrated Cell Culture Analyzers' Ver. 06|2020: 0.06 / 0.3 mL, 1.5 / 2 min; (D) the Analysis Module brochure status 11|08|2021, republished unchanged 03|2022 and 11|2025: 60 / 200 µL, 160 s. D is what Sartorius publishes today and is what the cells above carry; quote D and cite the edition, because all four are still reachable online. Storage is sourced at page level from §8 of the Ambr 15cc User Manual (TAP-9670-06-005 Iss. 9.00, 01 May 2019): §8.7.5.2 p.161 — the tip's 'entire contents … including headspace gas is dispensed into the sample cup and immediately aspirated into sample flow channel'; §8.5.1.1 pp.152–153 — the waste bottle holds 'all samples, calibration fluid and wash fluid for a complete reagent pack' and 'most mammalian and microbial cell lines will not survive in the waste bottle since they are mixed with wash fluid in the syringe'; §8.7.6 p.163 — the 'analysis module pH cell does not have active cooling'. The §8.1.1 component list names no rack, carousel, plate or cooled position at all. The Raman path ends the same way per a source that is not Sartorius: Sensors 2022;22(9):3397 — 'to prevent sample carryover, the sample was discarded following spectral analysis and a cleaning cycle was initiated'. Dilution is a hard negative rather than an unsearched cell: the string 'dilut' occurs nowhere inside the §8 addendum; reagent kit 001-4B60 ships rinse, cleaning solution and two calibration buffers and no diluent; and Fig. 90's volume budget is closed — 700 µL headspace gas + 60 µL sample + 50 µL gas in a 1000 µL tip, all dispensed and all aspirated — so no diluent has anywhere to enter. Diluting would also defeat the measurand, since pH shifts on dilution. Numbers that sit close enough to be misread onto this module, none of which belong to it. Volume and time: the 160 µL one row above 'Cycle time per reading, pH' in the 2020/03 brochure is the Ambr 15 BioPAT Spectro sample volume, not the 160 s cycle; '0.3 (undiluted)' and '0.55 (undiluted)' in the 06|2020 brochure are the Roche Cedex HiRes and Beckman Vi-CELL XR columns. Cooling: 'cooled culture stations' and 'chilled plate positions' are the Cooled Ambr 15 Workstation 24C/48C (manual §6) — the base system, not this module. Dilution: the 1:2 ratio printed one column away on Sartorius' Integrated Analytics poster is the Nova FLEX2's; the 1:4 / 1:10 / 1:20 in Machleid 2026 and the '2- or 4-fold diluted … prior to adding to the sample cup' in the Vi-CELL BLU app note are both Vi-CELL prep performed by the base Ambr liquid handler; automated 'spiking' of samples with analyte stock solutions is Raman DoE calibration-model building, not analytical dilution; and the diluting step in the TAP patent family (US 11,598,720) is sited at the bioreactor module's manipulation station, which that same patent defines as a different part of the machine. The patent also describes routing a sample back to the bioreactor for off-line reference — a claimed alternative workflow, not storage and not shipped behaviour, so it does not reopen the storage cell.

Perpetual + service

  • Upfront: high — instrument capital in year 0.
  • Annual: service + consumables + sampling sets (typically a fraction of capital per year).
  • 5-yr shape: big year-0 hit, then a lower flat run-cost.
  • Best when: you keep the unit 4+ years, have capex budget, and want the lowest long-run cost.

Subscription / instrument-as-a-service

The honest read from the underlying analysis: QB is a credible, fast-moving, price-disruptive challenger in the bioprocess-aseptic niche, not the market's largest, most-capitalized or most-patented player. Its genuine edges are perpetual-license economics (no compounding subscription), a vendor-agnostic retrofit that spans sampling, dosing, filtration and bioreactors on one stack, and fast deployment. The trade-offs are just as real: a small team, no issued-patent estate, and a shorter peer-reviewed / GMP track record than Eppendorf, SecureCell, Merck's MAST or Flownamics. Early-stage, multi-vendor and cost-sensitive labs are where it fits best; validated commercial GMP at scale still favours the incumbents today.
