Autosamplers & automated sampling, compared product-by-product

A vendor-neutral matrix of 85 autosampler / automated-sampling product lines from 38 makers for biotech & pharma, across 5 market segments — from bioprocess-aseptic samplers that pull sterile samples straight from bioreactors, to analytical autosamplers in QC/release labs, general-purpose liquid-handling robots, and process-analytics samplers. Compare the axes that actually drive the choice: pricing model (perpetual vs subscription) and hardware lock-in (vendor-agnostic vs platform-specific). Every row is confidence-marked against vendor datasheets; where a spec isn't public we say so. Several vendors ship more than one product line — each gets its own row.

bioPROBE single / orbitSAM Autosampler

The entry-level bioPROBE configuration — one probe per vessel feeding a simple auto-sorting carousel (orbitSAM), positioned as BBI-Biotech's budget automated sampler for single-reactor setups.

Bioprocess / asepticPerpetualOEM cross-brandMed
BBI-Biotech
Germany
bioPROBE quad / multiSAM Autosampler

The scale-up configuration — four independent probes (custom quad cannula holder) feeding a single multiSAM unit that can hold hundreds of cooled samples, built for parallel small-scale bioreactor screens rather than one large vessel.

Bioprocess / asepticPerpetualOEM cross-brandMed
BBI-Biotech

coolSAM Autosampler

The compact option — pairs bioPROBE's sampling head with an off-the-shelf Eppendorf ThermoStat C block instead of a dedicated carousel, trading capacity for a smaller footprint and both heating and cooling flexibility.

Cytiva (Danaher)
United States
Xcellerex Sample Manifold

Single-use aseptic sample-line accessory for Cytiva's Xcellerex XDR stirred-tank bioreactors and XDUO/XDM mixers — a consumable sampling component wired into the bioreactor's automation loop rather than a standalone robotic autosampler; Cytiva does not publish a fully-automated bench 'autosampler' SKU comparable to the analytical/liquid-handling entries in this set, so confidence is kept low.

Bioprocess / asepticOEM / consumablesPlatform-specificLow
Distek
United States
BIOne 1250 Bioprocess Control Station (automated sampling)

Not a dedicated benchtop autosampler like Distek's dissolution line — automated/scheduled sampling from the bioreactor runs through the control station's peristaltic pumps and PAT I/O rather than a separately branded sampling module. Distinct product line serving upstream bioprocess (cell culture/microbial) work rather than QC dissolution.

What it isBolts directly onto Eppendorf's own DASware-controlled bioreactor line (DASbox, DASGIP, SciVario twin, BioFlo 320) — deep, retrofit-friendly integration but zero cross-brand support. The deepest analyzer-agnostic sampling stack in this set — modular multiplexer, dilution, filtration and routing modules built to feed almost any downstream instrument (HPLC, Cedex Bio HT, Vi-CELL, Nova Flex) rather than lock buyers into one brand. The workhorse Seg-Flow platform — reusable pinch-valve hardware with non-contact ultrasonic sensors that routes native or pre-diluted samples from up to 8 vessels to as many as 4 downstream analyzers, vendor-agnostic on both ends.

Aseptic bioprocess samplers — the deciding numbers

The rest of this page is product-level; a buyer choosing an aseptic bioreactor-side sampler needs the actual per-instrument specs. These are researched from each vendor's own datasheet/product page and cited — where a number isn't published, it says n/p rather than guess. QB.systems is excluded (see the QB note below).

Perpetual vs subscription — the 5-year shape

The pricing-model column above drives more of the 5-year cost than the sticker price does. No vendor publishes list prices, so this is the shape of the decision, not a quote — the timing of the spend and where the break-even sits.

Perpetual + service

  • Upfront: high — instrument capital in year 0.
  • Annual: service + consumables + sampling sets (typically a fraction of capital per year).
  • 5-yr shape: big year-0 hit, then a lower flat run-cost.
  • Best when: you keep the unit 4+ years, have capex budget, and want the lowest long-run cost.

Subscription / instrument-as-a-service

  • Upfront: low — no capital, opex from day one.
  • Annual: one recurring fee bundling hardware, service and often consumables.
  • 5-yr shape: flat, predictable; higher cumulative if kept long.
  • Best when: you want opex not capex, a short/uncertain horizon, or flexibility to swap platforms.

Break-even rule of thumb: perpetual usually wins past roughly year 3–4; subscription wins on short horizons, capex constraints, and platform flexibility. Get each shortlisted vendor to quote both the upfront and the 5-year all-in (service + consumables + validation) — the sticker price alone hides the decision.

Best for… — where we'd start

Four segments sit in this table; a buyer usually lives in one. Here's where to start per intent — picks are at product-line level, so confirm the specific instrument's sampling interval, volume and integration before shortlisting.

Reading this comparison as A4BEE

We publish this portal, and QB.systems is our own product — so it sits in the table above as one neutral row, scored by exactly the same standard as everyone else. The honest read from the underlying analysis: QB is a credible, fast-moving, price-disruptive challenger in the bioprocess-aseptic niche, not the market's largest, most-capitalized or most-patented player. Its genuine edges are perpetual-license economics (no compounding subscription), a vendor-agnostic retrofit that spans sampling, dosing, filtration and bioreactors on one stack, and fast deployment. The trade-offs are just as real: a small team, no issued-patent estate, and a shorter peer-reviewed / GMP track record than Eppendorf, SecureCell, Merck's MAST or Flownamics. Early-stage, multi-vendor and cost-sensitive labs are where it fits best; validated commercial GMP at scale still favours the incumbents today.

About this data

Compiled from vendor datasheets, product pages and technical literature, product line by product line, current as of 2026. Segment, pricing and hardware-compatibility classifications are A4BEE's reading of that evidence, not vendor self-descriptions. Specs change; verify against the current datasheet (linked ↗) before a purchase decision. "908 Devices" is included as a market-consolidation case study — it divested its bioprocess line to Repligen in March 2025 and no longer competes here. Every row is confidence-marked; where a figure isn't public we show "n/d" rather than estimate. Vendor claims (including QB.systems') are flagged by the same confidence mark.

What's inside

  • Filterable matrix of 85 autosampler / automated-sampling product lines from 38 makers, across four market segments plus R&D-automation adjacents
  • Filters for segment, pricing model, hardware compatibility, region and confidence
  • A pricing read — which product lines sell perpetual one-time licenses vs compounding subscription software
  • A hardware-compatibility read — which platforms are vendor-agnostic retrofits vs tied to their own instruments
  • Every row confidence-marked against vendor datasheets, with a datasheet link and "n/d" where a spec isn't public
  • A transparent "where QB.systems fits" note — A4BEE's own product, profiled by the same standard with its trade-offs stated

Best used for

  • Shortlisting a bioreactor-side aseptic autosampler product line by pricing model and hardware compatibility before requesting quotes
  • Comparing analytical-autosampler product lines for a QC / release-testing lab
  • Understanding total-cost-of-ownership differences between perpetual-license and subscription-software sampling product lines
