The European CDMO field, compared on the axis that's actually up for grabs
A broad census of the European contract-manufacturing landscape — 255 CDMOs across 31 countries, from the global consolidators to single-site specialists — compared on tier, ownership, modality, geography, and the axis that's actually up for grabs: digital maturity. It's not a curated top-50; it's the whole field we could document. Every row is confidence-marked for how solid its facts are, and maturity is read conservatively from public signals only — so “early / paper-based” means “no public digital program we could find”, not a verdict. Filter and sort the field below.

Digital maturity
The maturity gap, cut three ways
Ratings are inferred from public signals. Read across size, ownership, and geography and the same pattern shows up: the leaders are big and (often) publicly or strategically owned; the early-stage majority sits in the mid/small tiers and in Central Europe.
Before you quote "most CDMOs are behind" — weight it
- Size-weight it. Among Tier-1 CDMOs (>€1bn revenue), 10% are digital leaders (3 of 29). The "gap" is concentrated in the small and mid tiers, not across the market by revenue.
- Strip the guesses. 18 of the 176 "early / paper-based" rows are low-confidence — no public digital signal found, which is not the same as confirmed absence. Those are counted as unknown in the snapshot above, not as laggards.
Maturity × tier
| Tier | Early | Mid | Leader | n |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tier 1 · >€1bn | 10 | 16 | 3 | 29 |
| Tier 2 · €250m–1bn | 51 | 33 | 3 | 87 |
| Tier 3 · <€250m | 115 | 21 | 3 | 139 |
Darker = more CDMOs in that cell. Every named leader is Tier 1–2; the small-and-mid tiers are almost entirely early-stage — that's the addressable gap.
Maturity × ownership
Maturity × geography
MethodHow we scored this — methodology & sourcing3-level maturity label
Digital maturity is a single 3-level label — leader / middle / early (paper-based) — assigned conservatively from public signals only, as of 2026. It is deliberately a coarse read: the absence of a public program reads as 'early', which systematically under-credits private and CEE players. Treat it as a where-to-look-first signal, not a scorecard.
- Leader — a named, specific public digital program: a named platform (e.g. an S/4HANA or MES rollout), quantified digital capex, or a concrete AI / automation use case.
- Middle — general digitalization signals (automation capex, 'digital plant' language, a newly automated site) without a named, specific program.
- Early / paper-based — no digital program we could find in public sources. This is a statement about public evidence, not proof of inaction.
- Where a public digital program exists, the row now carries a 'src ↗' evidence link (an MES/ERP rollout, a named AI/automation initiative, an annual-report section) — every cited URL was fetched and confirmed. About 40% of rows have one; the rest genuinely have no public digital footprint we could cite, which is the finding, not a gap.
- Every row also carries a data-confidence mark (high = audited / official disclosures, medium = reputable secondary sources, low = aggregator-only or inferred). A low-confidence maturity call should be read as 'unknown', not as a firm 'early'.
- The headline distribution skews to 'early' by construction of the conservative method, and the census is front-loaded (the best-sourced ~40 rows first). A revenue-weighted view would likely tell a less lopsided story — don't read the raw count as 'most of the market is behind'.
Think a CDMO is mis-rated? The label reflects only what we could find in public sources by 2026. Point us to a named public program and we'll re-tier it in the open — and if you're the CDMO and the program isn't public, that gap is itself the finding.
The modality landscape
What they make — and where the growth is
Small molecule and oral-solid are crowded; the fast-growing modalities — cell & gene, mRNA, ADCs — are thin on supply and tight on capacity, which is exactly where digital utilisation pays back fastest.
Supply per modality, by maturity
Modality breadth — specialists vs full-service
X-axis = number of modalities offered per CDMO (specialists on the left, full-service on the right).
Modality momentum · market projections (est.)

Reading the map
The maturity band tells you where to start
A4BEE's offerings map onto exactly this spectrum — each following an Audit → Build → Care model. Where a CDMO sits above points to the first move.
Early / paper-based (esp. CEE + family-owned)
Pain: Paper batch records, siloed LIMS/MES/ERP, no digital strategy
Fit: eBR/MES setup + the Enabling eBR blueprint. Start with the free eBR Readiness or Plant Digital Readiness assessment.
Digital CDMO on a4bee.com ↗Take the eBR Readiness assessment →
Mid maturity (PE roll-ups, scaling biologics)
Pain: Heterogeneous systems across acquired sites; stalled AI pilots on ungoverned data
Fit: A governed data platform to unify plant data — Data Platform Blueprint, then PoC.
Digital leaders (Lonza, Recipharm, Boehringer …)
Pain: Foundations exist; manual workflows across MES/LIMS/QMS remain
Fit: Production agents + GxP-validated RAG on SOPs/deviations, with an AI Operations Retainer for governance.

Work with A4BEE
Close the digital-maturity gap this landscape just showed you
A4BEE digitalises tech transfer, batch records and process verification for biotech and pharma — paperless, inspection-ready, released faster. Two-week maturity audit to a costed roadmap; live electronic batch records in six weeks.
About this comparison
Compiled from public sources as of 2026. Revenue, headcount, and site figures mix audited annual reports with aggregator estimates (frequently inaccurate for private and Central-European entities) — figures shown are as-reported and should be verified before quoting. Several CDMOs listed offer contract services as a secondary activity, so their "CDMO revenue" isn't separable from total company revenue. Digital-maturity ratings are inferred from public statements; the absence of a named program is not proof of inaction. Market-size and CAGR figures cited are forward projections from commercial research firms and vary materially across sources. A4BEE has no commercial relationship that biases any rating here.
What's inside
- A broad census of 250+ European CDMOs across 30+ countries — filterable by digital maturity, tier, ownership, modality, country, and data-confidence
- A real geographic map of Europe — CDMO count per country as a shaded choropleth
- Sortable head-to-head table — company, HQ, tier, ownership, revenue, modalities, a digital-maturity rating, and a confidence mark on every row
- Digital-maturity distribution — how many are named leaders vs. mid vs. early / paper-based
- Modality-supply + breadth charts — how many CDMOs cover each modality, from crowded small-molecule to thin cell & gene / mRNA
- "Where to start" frame — which digitalisation move fits each maturity band
Best used for
- Benchmarking a CDMO (yours or a target) against the European peer set
- Segmenting the market by digital maturity to prioritise outreach or M&A
- Briefing a team on the competitive landscape before a partnering or capacity decision
