Overview
What the research found
Frameworks agree on phases, not data
WHO TRS 1044 Annex 4, PDA TR 65 and the ISPE guide all describe the same arc. None says what a transferable process record looks like, so every transfer re-invents the data model.
Automation vendors move up
Emerson bought Fluxa in 2022 and launched its One-Click Technology Transfer board in October 2023. Körber pitches zero-day transfer.
Lab and data vendors move down
IDBS bought Skyland for process data in November 2021. Siemens closed its $5.1B Dotmatics deal on 1 July 2025.
Validation vendors move into the process life cycle
ValGenesis bought 4TUNE. QbDVision and Sware are still independent, which makes them the likeliest targets.
CDMO-specific features are rare
The best signals are Emerson's process knowledge management, BIOVIA Discoverant Cloud Exchange, Apprentice Tempo at Minaris and QbDVision at Viralgen.
Two transfers, two risks
Sponsor to CDMO is a data-quality risk. Site to site is an equipment-fit risk. Most tools are built for one of them.
The recipe chain is still re-keyed from Word
ISA-88 describes general, site and master recipes. In practice the hand-off between them is a document typed in again.
Where it hurts today
- Word and Excel carry the technology package
- Re-keying between sponsor, CDMO and MES
- Version control across partners
- Transfers that run 12 to 24 months
- ALCOA+ risk from manual copying
- A maturity mismatch between sponsor and CDMO

Before →
Sponsor process development
Where the process is born. What arrives is a tech package, usually documents, and its quality sets the pace of P3.
P1
Initiation
A sponsor asks. You decide whether the product can be made here at all.
P2
Planning and gap analysis
The TT plan, the gap list and the go/no-go. Where risk gets priced.
P3
Knowledge transfer
The sponsor's process becomes a structured definition the site can run.
P4
Readiness
Five parallel workstreams get the site, the lab and the paperwork ready.
Runs as the five workstreams below.
P5
Batch execution
Engineering batches first, then GMP batches on the approved record.
P6
Process validation
PPQ proves the process holds at scale, in this building.
P7
Close-out and handover
Report against the success criteria, hand over to routine operations.
P8
Continued process verification
Routine monitoring. Most TT plans stop before this; the data does not.
After ↓
Commercial manufacturing
Routine production on the approved batch record and recipes after handover.
After ↓
Regulatory CMC
Filings and post-approval variations that consume the transfer's data.
After ↓
APQR and change
Annual product quality review and later changes, fed by continued verification.
P4 · Readiness: five parallel workstreams
Run at once, not in sequence.
A · Control strategy and analytics
B · Materials
C · Facility and equipment
D · Documents and recipes

Gaps and overlaps

6 gaps
What no product does well
Sponsor tech-package intake
Reading a sponsor's documents into structured data is still manual. AI extraction, such as Körber's zero-day transfer idea and the IDBS agents, is early.
Grid columns: Knowledge transfer
TT plan and activities list
No product runs a PDA TR 65 deliverable workflow. Teams use a spreadsheet or a project tool.
Grid columns: Plan and gap
Multi-client segregation
Process-knowledge tools rarely document how they keep one sponsor's data apart from another's. Test it in a demo.
Grid columns: Knowledge transfer · Sponsor collaboration
Sampling plan as structured data
The sampling plan is still a Word file in most flows, then re-keyed into the LIMS.
Grid columns: Control strategy and analytics
Contamination control strategy
Annex 1 strategies remain a quality-system document rather than linked data.
Grid columns: Facility and equipment · Quality and documents
Cross-vendor recipe exchange
Recipes follow ISA-88 structure, but there is no common file standard. BioPhorum's digital transfer work targets it.

What replaces the Word file
| Step | Today | Best fit | Alternative | What changes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| P3.1 | Document package | Process knowledge platform (DeltaV PKM, QbDVision, IDBS Polar Control) | Benchling as the sponsor-side source | Sponsor data arrives as structured objects, not PDFs. |
| P2.1 | Unknown, often a spreadsheet | Template in Smartsheet or Planisware, built on the PDA TR 65 deliverables | QbDVision transfer module; Veeva for approval | No dedicated product exists. Build the deliverable template yourself. |
| P2.2 | Excel | QbDVision or ValGenesis iCMC | DeltaV PKM risk assessment | Gaps link to parameters and risks instead of sitting in a list. |
| D.1 | Word | DeltaV PKM or Polar Control, as the general recipe | Opcenter RD&L (unverified) | One parameter master. |
| D.2 | Word | MES master batch record (PAS-X, DeltaV MES, PharmaSuite, Tempo) | None needed | Instructions become batch-record steps. |
| D.3 | Word | MES electronic batch record | MasterControl eBR for smaller sites | No Word batch record. |
| D.4 | Word | DeltaV PKM or Polar Control | QbDVision | Parameters are data, not an attachment. |
| D.5 | SCADA, keyed by hand | DeltaV recipe transfer plus Tech Transfer Hub into the DCS | ISA-88 import into PCS 7 or PlantPAx (custom work) | Parameters push to the control system without re-keying. |
| A.1-A.4 | Word | QbDVision (control strategy, analytical procedures) | ValGenesis iCMC; Veeva QualityDocs for the controlled output | Specification data flows on to the LIMS. |
| A.5-A.6Bottleneck | Word | LIMS sampling plan module (Veeva LIMS, LabWare, LabVantage), fed by the control strategy | Tulip app for execution | One source drives the sampling plan and the LIMS set-up. |
| A.7 | TrackWise | Keep the QMS (TrackWise Digital or Veeva) | None needed | Approve the data object, not a Word file. |
| A.8 | LIMS, set up by hand | LIMS configured from specification data | TetraScience for instrument data | Less manual configuration. |
| B.1, B.3, B.4 | Word and Excel | BOM objects in the process knowledge platform, interfaced to SAP | SAP recipe and BOM directly | One BOM, loaded by interface. |
| B.2, B.6 | SAP | Keep SAP | None needed | An interface replaces the manual load. |
| B.5 | Word | LIMS | None needed | A digital certificate of analysis, as in the BioPhorum model. |
| P5.3 | Word | PIMS, Discoverant, PAS-X Savvy or Aizon | Seeq | Data sections write themselves. |
| P6.2 | Word | ValGenesis VLMS or Kneat Gx for protocols; a CPV tool for the data | None needed | Protocol and data stay linked. |
| P7.1, P7.3 | Word | Veeva QualityDocs plus the knowledge platform | None needed | Lessons stay searchable. |
Target architectures
Three ways to assemble the stack, and the one we would pick.
Option
Automation-vendor thread
Process knowledge
DeltaV PKM
Recipe and automation
DeltaV DCS with the Tech Transfer Hub
MES and batch record
DeltaV MES
LIMS
LabWare or LabVantage
QMS, documents, training
TrackWise Digital or Veeva
Validation
Kneat or ValGenesis
ERP
SAP S/4HANA
Data and CPV
AVEVA PI with Seeq
Best for: Sites already on DeltaV, with many transfers a year.
Main risk: Lock-in. Sites on other automation need mapping work.
Our pick
Vendor-neutral knowledge hub
Process knowledge
QbDVision, IDBS Polar Control with PIMS, or ValGenesis PLS
Recipe and automation
Existing DCS or SCADA (ISA-88), custom recipe interface
MES and batch record
Werum PAS-X MES (or PharmaSuite, Opcenter)
LIMS
Existing LIMS or Veeva LIMS
QMS, documents, training
Veeva Vault Quality (or keep TrackWise)
Validation
ValGenesis VLMS or Kneat
ERP
SAP S/4HANA
Data and CPV
AVEVA PI with PIMS, iCPV or Aizon
Best for: Several sites, mixed automation, many sponsors.
Main risk: Pushing recipes into the control system needs integration work.
Option
Cloud-agile for cell and gene therapy and clinical supply
Process knowledge
QbDVision, or Benchling on the sponsor side
Recipe and automation
Minimal DCS; equipment-level recipes
MES and batch record
Apprentice Tempo
LIMS
Veeva LIMS with TetraScience
QMS, documents, training
Veeva Vault Quality
Validation
Kneat or Sware Res_Q
ERP
SAP or a cloud ERP
Data and CPV
Aizon or PIMS
Best for: Small batches, fast onboarding, sponsors who want to watch.
Main risk: Scale-up to large commercial plants is less proven.
Our pick is the neutral hub for mixed automation and many sponsors. Choose the automation thread only if DeltaV is your DCS standard, because the process-knowledge to MES to DCS chain is the only one with published proof. Choose the cloud-agile stack for a cell and gene therapy or clinical unit.
Weights add to 100
What to test in an RFP
ISA-88 recipe model and a proven push to your DCS and MES
20. Ask for a live recipe push into your control system, not a slide.
Multi-client data segregation and sponsor access
15. Create two sponsors in the demo and try to cross them.
Structured control strategy, specification and sampling plan objects
15. Change a specification and watch what updates downstream.
Open APIs and standard connectors to SAP, LIMS, QMS and the historian
15. Ask for the connector list and the API documentation.
GxP readiness: Part 11 and Annex 11, audit trail, validation package, CSA support
10. Ask for the validation package and a recent audit summary.
Named biologics CDMO references
10. Call a CDMO reference, not a sponsor.
Vendor stability and roadmap after recent acquisitions
10. Ask who owns the vendor today and what the roadmap commits to in writing.
Total cost and deployment time
5. No vendor publishes list prices. Get a fixed-scope quote for one transfer.
6 moves
What to do first
1. Make one structured process definition the master
Generate the master formula, instructions, batch record and recipes from it. Stop copying between Word files.
2. Start with the bottleneck
Pilot the analytical lane (control strategy to sampling plan to LIMS set-up) and the documents lane (parameters to recipe) on one real transfer.
3. Put standards into contracts
Name the BioPhorum digital transfer formats in your quality agreements so sponsors send data, not documents.
4. Measure a baseline first
Count manual handoffs, re-keyed parameters and transfer duration before you buy anything.
5. Score vendors on the eight weighted criteria
Weights are a starting point. Change them to match your sponsors.
6. Demand a demo on your own data
Use one real sponsor package. Check the multi-client and recipe-push claims live.

Caveats
- Most performance figures (a 90% cut in transfer time, 95% less aggregation work, 70% faster to market) are vendor claims. No independent study backs them.
- Emerson does not explicitly tie its 90% and 7-FTE figures to Roche. Treat them as the vendor's.
- Seeq's Lonza case is Lonza Specialty Ingredients, not biologics.
- The BIOVIA and Thermo Fisher story does not say which business unit used it.
- Kneat's CDMO customers are not named.
- Items marked Not verified were not confirmed in the research. Confirm them in an RFI.
- No vendor publishes enterprise list prices, so this page carries none.
- Ownership and product names move quickly in this market. Re-check both at RFP time.

This is an independent reading of public material, not vendor advice. Coverage marks show what a product is documented to do, not how well it does it. Product names belong to their owners.
What's inside
- Interactive process map — 44 steps in 8 phases plus the neighbouring processes, coloured by software coverage or tool type, with a drawer per step
- Coverage grid — 35 products against 16 process groups, driven by the same filter as the map
- Six gaps and five overlaps, with advice on what to resolve before buying
- 18 document-bound steps and the tool that fits each better than a Word file
- Three target architectures, a weighted RFP criteria list and six first moves
- Product table with evidence labels on every claim, 111 sources and CSV export
Best used for
- Scoping a technology transfer digitisation programme before vendor demos
- Choosing between an automation-led, neutral-hub or cloud-agile stack
- Writing an RFP that tests the hand-offs, not the feature list

Biopharma Filtration & Bioprocessing Products Compared — 2026
A vendor-neutral, 59-product comparison of biopharma filtration & bioprocessing product lines from 23 makers — TFF, virus filtration, sterile filtration, depth clarification, membrane chromatography, centrifugal separation, ultrapure water and one automation-layer challenger. Filter by application, format, scale, single-use/reusable, region and confidence. Every row is confidence-marked against vendor datasheets (23 high-confidence); no vendor here publishes a list price, so there is no price column — ask for quotes.

Autosamplers & Automated Sampling Compared — 2026
A vendor-neutral, 85-product comparison of autosampler / automated-sampling product lines from 38 makers, for biotech & pharma — across four segments (bioprocess-aseptic, analytical/QC, liquid-handling, process-analytics) plus R&D-automation adjacents and one market-exit case study. Filter by segment, how you pay (capital instrument vs vendor-only consumables vs consumable products), hardware compatibility (vendor-agnostic vs platform-specific), region and confidence. Every row is confidence-marked against vendor datasheets.

European CDMOs Compared — 2026 Landscape
A broad, confidence-marked census of 255 European pharma/biotech CDMOs across 31 countries — not a curated top-50 — compared across tier, ownership, revenue, modality coverage, geography, and the axis that's actually up for grabs: digital maturity. See it on a real map of Europe, filter by any dimension, and sort the head-to-head table. Every row is marked for how solid its data is.
