Industrial historians compared: 40 systems, what they cost and where they fit
Enterprise archives, SCADA-embedded historians, cloud services and open-source databases, set side by side. Prices are shown with the quality of their source, because most vendors publish none.

Overview
Five kinds of system, one confusing market
16 systems
Enterprise process historians
Plant-to-enterprise archives with an asset model on top.
9 systems
SCADA-embedded
Historians that ship inside a SCADA or HMI platform.
5 systems
Cloud and IIoT
Managed time-series services and industrial data platforms.
8 systems
Open-source and developer TSDBs
Time-series databases you assemble into a historian.
2 systems
Context (not historians)
Layers that add context to a historian; not historians themselves.
The honest summary: for a single plant, Ignition or Canary usually cost a fraction of PI. For a multi-site, regulated estate, PI is still the safe default and the expensive one. Everything in between is a question of who already owns your SCADA and how much engineering your team can spare.

Yellow marks a price from a source with a stake in the answer. One-off licences and yearly fees share the axis on purpose: it shows where each vendor starts the conversation, not what five years costs (see the cost estimate below). Euros are not converted. Quote-only systems are absent because there is nothing to plot.

Open-source time-series databases: $0 licence, but plan 3–12 person-months of engineering to turn one into a historian.
These are the report authors’ estimates, not quotes. Currencies are as the source gave them and are not converted, so compare bars loosely. PI has no ceiling here because its price grows with tags and modules.

Where to start
Which historian for which job
| If you need | Look first at | Then |
|---|---|---|
| Small plant (under 10,000 tags) | Ignition Core Historian | Canary, VTScada |
| Multi-site enterprise process | AVEVA PI | Canary Enterprise, AspenTech IP.21 |
| Regulated pharma (GxP, 21 CFR Part 11) | AVEVA PI + PI Audit Reporter | Siemens Process Historian, zenon, Proficy |
| DCS-centric plant | The DCS's own historian (PHD, Exaquantum, 800xA History, DeltaV, SIMATIC PH) | Forward to PI or Canary for enterprise use |
| IIoT and cloud first | AWS IoT SiteWise or Fabric Eventhouse | Cognite |
| Limited budget, IT-skilled team | TimescaleDB, InfluxDB 3, QuestDB, TDengine | Factry |
| EU vendor preference | Factry (BE), COPA-DATA zenon (AT), Siemens (DE), CrateDB (AT) | Cognite (NO, not EU) |
| Unified namespace (MQTT) | Ignition + MQTT Engine, Canary (Sparkplug B), Factry | HighByte for modelling, on any historian |
Market
What is changing
Fewer, larger vendors
Schneider owns AVEVA and has agreed to buy Cognite and PTC. Emerson owns AspenTech and DeltaV. TPG owns Proficy. Expect overlapping products and roadmap changes.
Move to subscription
AVEVA said in March 2023 that new licences are subscription only. Many projects that would have been PI now look at Canary, Ignition, Factry or TDengine.
UNS and MQTT Sparkplug B
Canary, Factry, Ignition, AVEVA Adapters and TDengine all speak it, and Fabric reads MQTT directly.
Edge plus cloud
Store-and-forward at the edge, long-term analytics in the cloud.
Open storage engines
QuestDB inside Ignition, InfluxDB and PostgreSQL inside Factry, SQL Server inside Siemens: less lock-in than a closed archive.
Industrial AI and MCP
AVEVA has a PI MCP server planned, Cognite a preview, TDengine an agent runtime. Mostly preview: ask for reference customers.
Advice
What to do with this
- Running PI today? Don't migrate for price alone. Get a written multi-year Flex quote, get Canary and Ignition quotes for the same tag count, and move only the sites that barely use AF and event frames.
- New single plant in Poland or the EU: Ignition 8.3 or Canary, MQTT Sparkplug B for a unified namespace, data on-prem or in an EU cloud region.
- Regulated pharma site: PI, Siemens Process Historian or zenon. Ask for the validation package and audit-trail functions. Don't use a raw open-source database as the GxP system of record without a validated layer.
- Strong IT team, small budget: TimescaleDB or InfluxDB 3 with Telegraf or Node-RED and Grafana, or buy Factry.
- Vendor with a new owner (Proficy, Cognite, PTC/Kepware, AspenTech): write price limits, support-term guarantees and data-export rights into the contract.
- Security: subscribe to CISA and vendor advisories, keep historians in a DMZ (ISA/IEC 62443 zones and conduits), and update PI to CONNECT Agent, FactoryTalk Historian SE and ICONICS Hyper Historian to the fixed versions.

Limits of the evidence
- Most enterprise vendors don't publish prices. Third-party and competitor numbers can be wrong or biased: TDengine, Transpara, Flow Software, MachineCDN and Basekick all sell competing products.
- VTScada's 2025 prices come from three third-party sites; the official July 2025 list could not be opened.
- SiteWise storage prices differ between sources.
- Factry's €15,000 a year is for FactryOS; the historian itself is on request.
- The Schneider–Cognite and Schneider–PTC deals have not closed.
- Several systems were not checked in depth: zenon, WinCC OA, Geo SCADA, Litmus, Opto 22, CrateDB, Insights Hub prices, Google MDE, Prediktor and Chinese DCS historians.
- Benchmarks come from different tests and are not comparable. Run your own proof of concept.

What's inside
- 40 historians in five groups — enterprise, SCADA-embedded, cloud and IIoT, open-source databases, and context tools that are not historians
- Filterable explorer — type, deployment, licensing, price visibility and EU headquarters, with a shareable link and CSV export
- Price evidence table — every published number labelled by source quality, from vendor list prices to competitor estimates
- Five-year cost estimate for one plant of about 5,000 tags, in the currencies the sources used
- Performance claims kept apart and labelled as vendor, third-party, peer-reviewed or competitor figures
- Which historian for which job, market trends, advice and the limits of the evidence
Best used for
- Building a historian shortlist before vendor demos start
- Challenging a renewal quote from an incumbent historian with public price evidence
- Deciding whether an open-source time-series database is cheaper once engineering time is counted

Biopharma Filtration & Bioprocessing Products Compared — 2026
A vendor-neutral, 59-product comparison of biopharma filtration & bioprocessing product lines from 23 makers — TFF, virus filtration, sterile filtration, depth clarification, membrane chromatography, centrifugal separation, ultrapure water and one automation-layer challenger. Filter by application, format, scale, single-use/reusable, region and confidence. Every row is confidence-marked against vendor datasheets (23 high-confidence); no vendor here publishes a list price, so there is no price column — ask for quotes.

Autosamplers & Automated Sampling Compared — 2026
A vendor-neutral, 85-product comparison of autosampler / automated-sampling product lines from 38 makers, for biotech & pharma — across four segments (bioprocess-aseptic, analytical/QC, liquid-handling, process-analytics) plus R&D-automation adjacents and one market-exit case study. Filter by segment, how you pay (capital instrument vs vendor-only consumables vs consumable products), hardware compatibility (vendor-agnostic vs platform-specific), region and confidence. Every row is confidence-marked against vendor datasheets.

European CDMOs Compared — 2026 Landscape
A broad, confidence-marked census of 255 European pharma/biotech CDMOs across 31 countries — not a curated top-50 — compared across tier, ownership, revenue, modality coverage, geography, and the axis that's actually up for grabs: digital maturity. See it on a real map of Europe, filter by any dimension, and sort the head-to-head table. Every row is marked for how solid its data is.
